Motor third-party liability insurance (MTPL) check by registration number

The register of motor third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) is kept by the Czech Insurers' Bureau and only a group of people defined by law may query it. We explain who is allowed in, how to go about it and what to do if you find out that a vehicle is not insured.

Only a group of people defined by law may query the register — typically the injured party in a specific accident, who states its date and place. We therefore do not do it for you, but link to the official tool instead.

Go to the Czech Insurers' Bureau information centre

By law, every vehicle entered in the register that has not been temporarily withdrawn from service must have motor third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) — even if it is only parked up. Details of the insurance are held in a central register kept by the Czech Insurers' Bureau. That register is not public, however: under the Act on motor third-party liability insurance it may be consulted by insurers, vehicle registration authorities, the police and offence-handling authorities — and, in addition, by an injured party dealing with a specific road accident.

  1. 1If you are the injured party in a specific accident, use the information centre of the Czech Insurers' Bureau.
  2. 2In the form you enter the registration number or the VIN together with the date and place of the accident.
  3. 3You find out which insurer to claim the damages from.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone check another car's insurance by its registration number?
No. The register of motor liability insurance is not public. It may be consulted by insurers, vehicle registration authorities, the police and offence-handling authorities. An injured party in a specific road accident is entitled to find out the insurer of the vehicle that caused the damage — that is what the information centre of the Czech Insurers' Bureau is for.
How do I find out whether my own car is insured?
Fastest of all with your own insurer — in the client zone or on the helpline. On request, the insurer will also issue you a claims history statement, which comes in handy when moving to another insurer.
Does a car that is parked up also need motor liability insurance?
If the vehicle is entered in the register and has not been temporarily withdrawn from service, the obligation to insure it continues — even if you never drive it. Withdrawal from service is reported to the municipal authority with extended powers.
What are the penalties for an uninsured vehicle?
Operating a vehicle without motor liability insurance is an offence carrying a fine. On top of that, for the period without cover the Czech Insurers' Bureau charges a contribution from the uninsured, the amount of which depends on the type of vehicle and the number of days.
