The register of motor third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) is kept by the Czech Insurers' Bureau and only a group of people defined by law may query it. We explain who is allowed in, how to go about it and what to do if you find out that a vehicle is not insured.
Only a group of people defined by law may query the register — typically the injured party in a specific accident, who states its date and place. We therefore do not do it for you, but link to the official tool instead.
Go to the Czech Insurers' Bureau information centreBy law, every vehicle entered in the register that has not been temporarily withdrawn from service must have motor third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) — even if it is only parked up. Details of the insurance are held in a central register kept by the Czech Insurers' Bureau. That register is not public, however: under the Act on motor third-party liability insurance it may be consulted by insurers, vehicle registration authorities, the police and offence-handling authorities — and, in addition, by an injured party dealing with a specific road accident.
As the injured party you find out which insurer to claim compensation from for the damage caused by the other driver.
Whether the insurance ended when ownership was transferred will be confirmed by your insurer — the fastest and most reliable route.
Motor liability insurance does not transfer automatically. Take out your own once ownership is transferred — we are happy to compare offers across the market.
