Running a business in Czechia on a trade licence? Unlike employees, you are usually not covered by the public health insurance system. We compare insurers' offers and advise on what the policy needs to meet.

When you will need it

You work on a trade licence

Self-employment on its own does not establish participation in public health insurance - unlike employment with a Czech company.

A stay longer than 90 days

Health insurance is submitted with an application for a long-term visa, for residence and for its extension.

You need a certificate for the authorities

You receive the policy and proof of payment by email, usually in English as well.

What to watch out for

Business and employment at the same time

If you are also employed by a Czech company alongside your business, you are in the public system and do not need commercial insurance. Check this before you arrange anything.

Your family is assessed separately

A partner and children are assessed on their own. Children under 18 with long-term residence have been in the public system since 1 January 2024.

Health insurance does not cover business liability

Damage you cause to a client while working is covered by liability insurance - a separate product. We are happy to go through it with you.

Continuity when extending

When extending your residence, insurance for the follow-on period is submitted again. A gap between policies causes problems.

Questions from self-employed clients

Do I need commercial insurance if I hold a trade licence?
Self-employment does not establish participation in public health insurance, so non-EU nationals usually need commercial health insurance. What decides is your specific residence status - check it with the Ministry of the Interior or get in touch and we will go through it with you.
What if I am also employed under a contract?
Employment with a Czech employer establishes public health insurance and your employer pays it for you. In that case you do not need commercial health insurance for foreigners.
Can I claim the premium as a business expense?
Discuss the tax treatment of the premium with your accountant or tax adviser - as an insurance broker we do not provide tax advice.
How long should the policy run?
Usually for the period you are applying for. Applications generally need the whole requested period covered, not just part of it.
How quickly will I have the insurance?
You get the price straight away. An adviser completes the arrangement with you and the documents arrive by email.
